Exterior Car Detailing From Roofline to Tyre Wall

A proper exterior detail is about more than getting the dirt off. It is a sequence of careful stages: washing, decontaminating, protecting and finishing, so the paintwork, wheels and details all look right together.

What It Includes

What Exterior Detailing Includes

Exterior detailing covers every outside surface that gets dirty: the bodywork, the glass, the wheels and tyres, and the smaller details like exhaust tips. Each service has a clear purpose, and together they take the car from road-worn to properly presentable.

Washing removes the everyday grime. Decontamination with a clay bar deals with what washing leaves behind. Waxing adds a protective finish, and the wheels, tyres and details are brought up to the same standard as the paint, so nothing lets the finished car down.

The Exterior Process

How an Exterior Detail Comes Together

Every stage sets up the next. Skipping ahead, such as waxing over contaminated paint, only seals the problem in.

01

Wash

The bodywork is washed to lift road grime, dirt and traffic film.
02

Wheels

Wheel faces and inner barrels are cleaned of brake dust and grime.
03

Decontaminate

A clay bar removes bonded contamination that washing cannot shift.
04

Protect

Wax is applied to add depth to the finish and shield the paint.
05

Finish

Tyres are dressed and exhaust tips polished for a complete look.

Stage One

The Full Body Wash

The full body wash is the foundation of every exterior detail. The aim is to remove as much loose dirt, road grime and traffic film as possible before anything touches the paint more directly.

It covers the whole body of the car, including the lower panels and sills that pick up the most road spray. A thorough wash at this point makes every later stage safer and more effective, because decontamination and waxing work on clean paint rather than on a layer of dirt.

Wheels & Tyres

Wheels, Barrels and Tyres Done Properly

Wheel Washing

Wheels collect brake dust, road grime and tar faster than any other part of the car. Wheel washing cleans the faces, spokes and the areas around the wheel nuts so they look as fresh as the bodywork.

Wheel Barrel Cleaning

The inner barrel sits behind the spokes and is easy to ignore, yet on open-spoke designs it is clearly visible. Barrel cleaning extends the clean beyond the visible face to the inside of the wheel.

Tyre Shine

Once the wheels are clean, the tyres are dressed. Tyre shine gives the sidewalls a neat, finished look that frames the wheels and completes the stance of the car.

Paint Preparation & Finish

Decontamination, Clay Bar and Wax

Once the car is washed, the paint surface is prepared and given a protective finish.

Paint Decontamination & Clay Bar Treatment

Run your hand over freshly washed paint and it can still feel rough. That texture is bonded contamination: particles that have stuck to the surface and will not come away with a wash.

A clay bar treatment lifts this contamination from the paint, leaving it noticeably smoother. On an exterior detail it is the step that turns a washed car into a properly clean one, and it gives any wax that follows a better surface to bond to.

Car Waxing

Waxing is the finishing coat of an exterior detail. Applied to clean, decontaminated paint, it adds depth and warmth to the colour and leaves the bodywork looking glossy rather than simply clean.

It also adds a protective layer that helps shield the paintwork between washes. If you are looking for longer-term protection, our ceramic coating options are designed for that.

Finishing Touches

The Details That Complete the Car

Clean paint makes small things stand out. Sooty exhaust tips and a dusty engine bay are the kind of details that let an otherwise clean car down, so they can be included as part of the exterior work.

Exhaust Tip Polishing

Exhaust tips are cleaned and polished to remove soot build-up and help bring back their shine, so the rear of the car looks as finished as the front.

Engine Detailing

The engine bay is carefully cleaned of built-up dust and grime, leaving it tidy and presentable when the bonnet is lifted.

Why It Matters

Why Proper Exterior Detailing Matters

Removes What Washing Misses

Bonded contamination, brake dust and grime in the wheel barrels survive a normal wash. Detailing deals with them.

Better Finish, Not Just Clean

Decontaminated, waxed paint looks deeper and glossier than paint that has only been washed.

Protection Between Washes

A wax layer helps shield the paintwork from the weather and road dirt between cleans.

Enhance or Protect the Paint Next

If the paint looks dull or swirled, a stage one polish can enhance it. If you want protection that lasts longer than wax, ceramic coating is available in 6-month and 12-month options.

FAQ

Exterior Detailing Questions

Regular washing keeps loose dirt under control, but it does not remove bonded contamination that sticks to the paint over time. A clay bar treatment deals with that, which is why it is part of a proper exterior detail rather than a standard wash.

Wax is the natural finish for an exterior detail, adding gloss and helping protect the paint between washes. If you want protection intended to last for a set period, look at our 6-month and 12-month ceramic coating options.
